Payroll Simulator
A simulation tool that calculates pay from gross to net and net to gross, shows tax bracket transitions through the year and the total employer cost month by month.
Built by: Ufuk Süleyman Oflaz
The problem
Pay decisions are often made by looking at a single month’s payroll. Yet as the cumulative income tax base moves into higher brackets during the year, the employee’s net pay falls; if net pay is to be held constant, employer cost rises. This effect is usually invisible in the budget and in pay negotiations.
Why it matters
Payroll is the largest fixed cost in many companies. Seeing the full-year cost of pay correctly directly affects the accuracy of both the budget and the cash plan.
Approach
- Calculate social security contributions, income tax and stamp duty deductions from gross pay month by month.
- Track the cumulative income tax base to show bracket transitions and the change in net pay.
- Use net-to-gross calculation to derive the gross pay and employer cost of a constant net salary through the year.
- Link pay rise and headcount scenarios to an annual cost projection.
What it examines
- Gross-to-net and net-to-gross calculation
- Cumulative tax base and bracket transitions
- Employee and employer social security contributions
- Income tax and stamp duty deductions
- Monthly and annual employer cost
- Pay rise scenarios
- Output that feeds the budget and cash plan
Example output
A monthly table of gross pay, deductions, net pay and employer cost, with an annual net pay chart marking tax bracket transitions.
Limitations
- Tax brackets, contribution rates, ceilings and exemptions are updated every year; calculations must be confirmed against the legislation for the period.
- Company-specific incentives and reductions must be defined separately.
